Ensuring Safe and Stress-Free Travel for Your Pet
Health Certificates & Pet Travel: What You Need to Know
Planning to travel with your pet—especially internationally—requires careful preparation and strict adherence to regulations. Due to the complexity of travel health requirements, Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital offers Certification of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) services only to established clients who have been under our care for at least one year.
Pet travel requirements vary significantly between states and countries, and some destinations have lengthy preparation timelines, quarantine protocols, and extensive documentation requirements. For this reason, we strongly encourage pet owners to begin researching requirements as soon as travel is being considered. A helpful resource for planning is the USDA APHIS Pet Travel website: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-travel
While our veterinarians are USDA-accredited, please be aware that we are not a pet travel agency, and some travel plans—particularly international—may be best handled in collaboration with companies that specialize in animal relocation and pet travel logistics.
If you are an established client and believe your pet may need a health certificate for travel, please contact us well in advance of your intended departure. Most airlines require documentation at least 10 days before travel, and some countries require documentation, testing, or treatments to begin months ahead of time.
Note: We are unable to accommodate last-minute travel health certificate requests.
